Children in the Primary Classroom choose works and activities that support their independence, responsibility, and their social- emotional and intellectual growth. This takes the form of independent work, collaboration with peers, and time for exploration. All of this takes place in an environment that has been intentionally designed to support this important work of children.

  • Children choose their work, do their work and put it away when finished. This whole cycle encourages concentration, attention to detail, coordination and good work habits.
  • An integrated, expansive curriculum provides children with a variety of experiences allowing the child to move from concrete to more abstract thinking.
  • Multi-age grouping allows the children to develop a strong sense of community with peers and teachers.
  • Multi-age grouping also allows children to learn and teach each other.
  • The teacher guides the child to activities based on their needs and interests: fostering the child’s development while modifying activities according to the child’s learning style.
  • Each child is respected as an individual and valued as a part of the larger community.
  • Respect of the environment and of others is emphasized.
  • Reading and other language areas, geometry, science and practical life are just a few disciplines which are enjoyed and learned.
